MORE ABOUT THE FEATURED ARTISTS

Sharanjeet Singh Mand (Sitar) is a young Virtuoso of Sitar and Surbahar.
He is a disciple of doyen of Indian Classical Music,  Pandit Harvinder Sharma. Sharanjeet is one of the foremost representatives of Ustad Vilayat Khan’s Gharana among his generation.  Sharanjeet is also an accomplished composer and a devoted Guru.

In 2018, Sharanjeet made history by becoming the first Indian Classical musician to perform a solo concert for the Juno Awards. CBC listed Sharanjeet as one of the 30 Under 30 Hottest Classical Musicians in 2019. This is hailed as a historic breakthrough worldwide, as Sharanjeet is the first non-Western classical musician to make it on the list.

Sharanjeet is widely known as a Sitarist with impeccable style and flair. His performances have enthralled audiences in India, Canada, the USA, and many other countries alike. A young and dynamic performer, his style is laced with fast taans and soulful gayaki ang. Many consider him one of the bearers of the Sitar.

Carrying forward the rich musical heritage of Imdad Khani Gharana, he has developed a unique and sensitive style of Gayaki Ang (vocal imitation by instrument). His repertoire includes captivating musical ornaments like Khatka, Murki, Meend, Gamak, etc., of Khayal style and Progressive Jor and Jhalla with unique patterns of improvisation in different rhythmic cycles in traditional as well as rarely played ragas.

He gave his first performance at 16 at the Mother Teresa Homage Concert. Since then, he has been performing at various prestigious stages throughout the world. His dedication has earned him a niche among the finest instrumentalists of his generation and an international career as a performer as well as an educator. He has also earned the National Gold Medal for Sitar by the Ministry of Culture, India.  On 16th August 2015, Sharanjeet performed for the reception of Mr Narendra Modi and Mr Stephen Harper, Prime Ministers of India and Canada, respectively, in Vancouver during the Indian Prime Minister’s historic visit after 44 years.

Sharanjeet is regularly invited as a guest lecturer at Douglas College, University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and many other institutions. Sharanjeet is a resident teacher/performer at Places Des Arts, one of Canada's oldest conservatory.

Equally adept in Indian and Western Classical music, Sharanjeet has collaborated with musicians of both genres and composed music for ensembles and orchestras. He is credited as the first Sitarist to play ‘Art Song’ (Opera) ‘Ave Maria’ on Sitar.

As a celebrated TV host, Radio host, and through many community engagement programs, Sharanjeet has dedicated himself fully to preserving and promoting Indian Classical Music.

Sunny Marathu (Tabla)

Growing up in a musical family surrounded by music, Sunny began training in Tabla at a very young age.  His training started with Ustad Satwant Singh, who gave him a strong foundation in Tabla playing. To this day, he continues to learn under the guidance of Tabla maestro Pandit Yogesh Samsi, one of the most famous and foremost Tabla players of the Punjab Gharana (style of playing). Over the last 25 years, Sunny has accompanied numerous musicians from around the world, including many world-renowned musicians from the Indian Classical music tradition.

Besides being trained as a classical musician, Sunny is known as a versatile Tabla player and has also accompanied dance, fusion and Western classical music.  The Punjab style is known for its rich poetry and complex rhythmic patterns; this has enabled Sunny to be comfortable accompanying many genres and styles of music and dance.

As a youth, Sunny was given the opportunity to accompany Pandit Jasraj, a world-renowned vocalist from the Mewati style of singing, during his vocal classes in Vancouver.  This led to further opportunities to accompany various musicians both locally and internationally.  Sunny is recognized as one of Canada’s leading Tabla players, and he is sought by India’s top classical musicians to accompany on Tabla.

In addition to accompanying, Sunny regularly performs Tabla solos locally within Canada and has also played solos in USA, UK, Australia and India.

Apart from performing, Sunny has taught Tabla at various institutes around the world and is a dedicated teacher. He inspires young children and students of all ages to learn and explore Tabla as an art form. While actively pursuing his passion for learning and playing Tabla, Sunny has also completed degrees in Finance and Accounting.

VANCOUVER INTER-CULTURAL ORCHESTRA (VICO)

The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO), founded in 2001, was one of the first concert orchestras devoted to performing new intercultural music on a grand scale. It is currently one of only a handful of such professional ensembles that exist in the world. The VICO brings together musicians and composers from many cultural and artistic communities in the Greater Vancouver area, including Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Indian, Persian (Iranian), Latin and South American, Vietnamese, African, North American and European to create what has been described as “the United Nations of Music” (CBC Radio), and “music that sounds like Vancouver looks” (The Georgia Straight). The Vancouver Sun has called VICO “a world music super-group.”

VICO strives to be a fresh and relevant voice in the contemporary music of our city, our province and our country. The ensemble builds bridges of imagination, approaching diversity as a fascinating challenge and a creative call to action. Its work is to make connections, between performers and audiences of all ages and backgrounds, across the Lower Mainland, throughout Canada and the world; to create and perform orchestral music that transcends boundaries: cultural, social, political, geographical. Since its inaugural performance in 2001, VICO has developed and performed over 50 new intercultural pieces by ground-breaking Canadian composers. www.vi-co.org
